The good, the bad and the orphaned identities in your campus Microsoft 365 tenant

Speaker session at UNC CAUSE 2026. Henrik Skalmerud speaks at the Wilmington Convention Center in Wilmington, NC, October 28 to 30, 2026. The session time is in the conference program.

In this session, we're taking an honest look at identity security in the age of AI. The Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2026 names identity compromise the leading threat to organizations, and what has changed is who the identities are.

How do small leftovers turn into big exposure in a campus Microsoft 365 tenant? A guest invite from a 2022 research grant. An admin role granted for one weekend. A service account called test-final-2 that nobody dares to delete. Each one looks dead. Together they decide who can get in, and what it costs to keep them.

Henrik walks through a live tenant to find them, drawing on the tenants Bsure reads every day, including a campus here in North Carolina, and on the Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2026, which finds cloud identity abuse is the technique Microsoft observes most against state and local government and education. Through real findings (and the odd surprise or two), the session shows why small leftovers matter, and leaves you with five checks to run in your own tenant.
